Married at First Sight
2018 was the year that saw the abandonment of Married at First Sight, this was a social experiment or maybe just pretence, which most viewers never seemed to mind. The unholy experimentation of forced conflict combined with the clever casting of this reality show by Nine networks became the years top-rated series in Australia.
Three relationship counsellors can be seen as they sort of attempt to provide credibility to the whole thing nothing short of being a spectacle which reduces to amusingly obvious bits, manipulation, lying, and the idea of wives at dinner parties that are wine-soaked are as bad. As the nation got absorbed via the eye-openers, the contestants reaffirmed their desires for relationships that are serious.
The series appealed to a near viewers total of two million, which displaces Ninja Warriors that was the most watched the year before, which ended in seventh place in 2018. The program that did land in the second place, is the US drama the Good Doctor.
The coverage of the royal wedding by Seven’s was the most-watched event in Australia and the credits for this 2018 event goes to Gareth Fuller. With 453,000 viewers the breakfast program overshadows Today with 351,000 watchers. In news programs, the No.1 is 7Mate followed by Nine that overshadowed Sunday Night with its 60 Minutes.
Apart from The Good Doctor there only other international series’ part of the list’s top ten is ABC’s Tasmania by David Attenborough as well as Death in Paradise. It could mean that the American films and comedies are no longer as powerful as they once were, especially not when it comes to the rating. If you look back to Friend and the viewers total it had in 1998, it overshadowed all other programs as in Sydney alone it was followed by 739,000 fans, a number that cannot even be closely matched today by any of the programs.
While no Australian drama found itself rated amongst the top ten, twenty years ago Water Rats and Blue Heelers did manage to it, and so did Die Hard with a Vengeance even three years after it was already released in cinemas. In 2018 it was Nine that appealed most to the audience via SBS and ABC, the live broadcasting of the royal wedding and the coverage by nine was viewed by over 2.64 million, while the top-rated list of regular programs includes the following:
